Governance Commission presents complimentary copies of the LGA to Legislatu

The Governance Commission on October 3, 2019, completed a series of courtesy calls on Leaders and members of the national Legislature, the Senate Pro-Tempore, Honorable Albert Chie and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honorable Bhofal Chambers, during which time complimentary copies of the Local Government Act (LGA) of the Republic of Liberia were presented by Cllr. A. Ndubuisi Nwabudike, Chairman of the Governance Commission.

In his presentation, Cllr. Nwabudike lauded members of both Houses for their collaboration, invaluable efforts, and support that facilitated the legislation of the Local Government Act- an instrument for promoting good governance and a decentralized system of governance.

In his response, House Speaker Bhofal Chambers pledged government support to ensure that citizens’ participation is protected in our democracy as well as political governance, economic management, and socio-economic development.

The Speaker further stated that the House remains resolute in its quest to make the right decisions, make policies and laws to ensure and strengthen citizens’ participation and decision making at all times.

The Senate Pro-Tempore, Albert Chie on his part, commended the Chairman of the Governance Commission and his team for their hard work and assured the Commission of the Senate’s support in the implementation of the Local Government Act.

The LGA was commissioned by the Governance Commission and adopted into law by the 54th Legislature and approved by the President Dr. George Maneh Weah on September 19, 2018. It repealed the Local Government Law Title 20, Liberian Codes of Law Revised and established in its stead, a new title now known as the Local Government Act of 2018.

The Act seeks to enable the government to share some of its powers to subnational levels in support of the government’s ongoing decentralization program.
